Ethics of intellectual property

Introduction

This site attempts to defend the idea that intellectual property is unethical. I will do this by discussing different concepts involving intellectual property and the effect it has on human culture, economy and scientific advancements; discuss the philosophical grounds of intellectual property, the human psychology and sociology behind it and how this debate ties in with earlier movements throughout history; and finally suggest some of the impacts legalized piracy might have on the world. The gist of my arguments will be that there exist no solid reasons to protect intellectual property, and therefore people should be allowed their right to copy and reproduce as they see fit. But before I get ahead of myself, lets start with some definitions of some concepts to avoid confusion.

Intellectual property
Intellectual property ensures that any commercial or artistic idea can be used by one party exclusively. This term can refer to copyrights, trademarks and/or patents.

Copyrights
Copyrights are the exclusive rights of use and profits from a certain product.

Trademarks
Trademarks refers to a specific sets of a characteristic of a business or product which identify the product and/or manufacturer.

Patents
A patent is a publication of know-how on production in exchange for a short period of exclusive economic rights.

Piracy
A violation of copyrights

Patent infringement
A violation of patent law

Counterfeit products
Counterfeit products are products that violate protected trademarks.

Plagiarism

Plagiarism is the false claim of authorship.

After not working on this site for about a year or so, I decided it was about time to update it a bit. I've added some paragraphs to the page discussing ethics. I've also started on the human advancement page. It's a bit basic though, I'm still thinking of how to improve it. But I do think I've managed to mention the gist of things.
